A Bad day in Nasiriyah

Hello All,

Just a quick note to let you alll know that I'm alive and doing fine here in Southern Iraq. You might have heard about the attack in Nasiriyah (Just down the road) but my troops and I are doing ok.

I heard the blast and thought it was just the EOD (see Bomb Squad) making war left-overs go away. Nope, it was way worse than that. I think that I might have had my last day off for a while... Have I ever mentioined that I HATE terrorists? Big time.

GOOD NEWS! Our Relief Unit (the one replacing us) has been identified! Yep, we know who's coming here to replace us, just not quite when... but it looks like we'll be home around the beginning of April. The REALLY good news is that this means the Army knows we're here and haven't forgotten about us... for I awhile I was beginning to wonder.

Well, gotta go. I need to get the S-2 (see Intel or Military Intelligence) report. This one should be pretty good. For a change. Hopefully.

I love you all,

Will

We all think of you guys often. And when something bad happens we are on pins & needles waiting to here you are okay. So as the others have said try and stay as safe as you can. We want you all to get home safe!

I am glad to see your returning and yet sad. One of the biggest problems in Vietnam was troop rotation. Just about the time the troops understood the bad guys, they would get rotated out. Then a batch of FNG would take over and learn the same lessons that the old guys got bloodied over. RR is no fun to return from, but at least the smart guys are still there.

Maybe you just have to get rid of more bad guys. glenn

Hi Will,
a joke to lift your spirts!!

Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Al Gore were up in heaven, and
God's sitting on the great white throne.

God addresses Al first. "Al, what do you believe in?"
Al replies, "Well, I believe I won that election, but that it was your
will that I did not serve. And I've come to understand that now."
God thinks for a second and says "Okay, very good. Come and sit at
my left."

God then addresses Bill. "Bill, what do you believe in?"
Bill replies, "I believe in forgiveness. I've sinned, but I've never
held a grudge against my fellow man, and I hope no grudges are held
against me."
God thinks for a second and says "You are forgiven, my son. Come
and sit at my right."

God then address Hillary.
"Hillary, what d you believe in?"

"I believe you're in my chair."

by the way, I just wanted to thank you and all the veterans out there for doing what you do. thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. God bless you.

Hi Will,
I'm glad to hear you're okay. Every time I hear stuff on the news about another bomb going off, or more people being wounded and killed, I get very anxious, worry about you, and say a prayer for you.
I'm also very glad that the Army has identified a unit to replace yours. It's about damn time! Hopefully, they will come to where you guys are before April, but at least you have a general timeframe.
I also wanted to let you know that I and many others really appreciate all of the things you all are doing over there, your hard work and sacrifice. I thought of you on Veterans Day. Your efforts will not be forgotten.
Please be careful, and keep watching over your guys. Hang in there and stay safe.

Will,
I just recently found out about your site. I enjoyed it very much. I have been wondering what has been going on with you guys. I was wounding if you guys brought along “the log?” I have some news that you guys might be interested in from back here. The a.g.r. mechanic that was with the unit got a medical discharge in record speed.

A short time ago some big swinging richards came down from higher up because they had nothing better to do that do a spot check of the facilities. It turns out that det. 1 was completely unlocked upon their arrival. Not good! Also, I guess they found some asbestos in the building. I do not know where or how much, or even what they are going to do about it.

If you could please pass on a message for me to the best buy crew. Little T the almost 21 year old is now GM of store 17. (Thanks)

So does this mean the possibility that we can celebrate #31 with you? Ok, so we will do #30 one night and #31 the next.
Glad to hear all is well with you guys after the attack in Nasiriyah. Little too close for comfort - you said it was quiet there!
You know the drill - keep your head down and your spirits up. I'm buying that round of beers for the gang for ya tomorrow night - will keep the bar tab for you so you can pay me back :)

Dear Will,

I hope you and yours had a great Veterans Day. (I posted an entry for Tuesday as a guest blog post here, at 'Deux Ego,'

Thank you for all that your are doing for our country and our fellow Americans.

Please keep up the good work, and stay safe.

Thanks, and God Bless!!

Milena and Adriana,
I was sorry to hear about the Italian soldiers who were lost in the terrorist attack on Nasiriyah. Our sympathy and prayers go to their families as well as to the families of all those who have lost loved ones.

Will,
I read your column whenever there's a new post. I try to keep up w/ the bloogers in the sandbox, you guys tell me more than the damned media ever will. Dave is retired Army so I can understand most of the lingo. Your writing is nicely done and deeply appreciated.
My son went to play in the sand in Jan and came back in Aug, but we are leary that he'll be returning if things don't straighten up soon. It's not 3rd ID from Ft Stewart that's replacing you by any chance, is it?
As for not taking leave, well if you change your mind, a typical Southern Sunday meal awaits you in N.C. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, sliced ham, corn pudding, coconut ckae and plenty of sweet iced tea. Just give us a few days notice to find a big enough bird.
Stay safe over there, ok?

Will,

Can you post if your guys need anything? I would be so happy to send items that are needed or for troops that don't have family. I am just not sure what you guys are getting or if there is a need. You can email me directly or pass it on to anyone that could use a state-side gopher.

Who's Will Anyway?
What's All This Then?
As most of the regular readers of Rooba.net know, I have a few friends that have been sent or called up for the soon-to-be-conflict in Iraq. One such friend is Will aka Will not weasel or Will from Omaha or whatever other moniker he's using on my site that day.

Will is a pretty good writer and this is the collection of his writings. It'll be interesting to hear updates from a soldier's point of view, so I'll be posting them for all to read.

Take care Will
